BIRTH HOUSE OF TIZIANO VECELLIO

In the village of Pieve di Cadore there is the family residence that saw Tiziano Vecellio come to light, escaped from the devastation and reprisals of German soldiers at the time of the Cambra wars of the fifteenth century, at the time of construction it represented a typical home of a local family distinguished, which included, among its members, prestigious characters: notaries, timber merchants, in charge of the management of public affairs. The current situation, on the other hand, is the result of interventions. With the execution of the demolition intervention, the ancient doors and windows of the original building came back to light, small openings, peculiar to the fifteenth century. The current building consists of two floors in masonry, with an irregular plan, with balconies, an external wooden staircase and a gabled roof with a scàndole roof. On the ground floor, the large room with wooden log floor houses a collection of reproductions from the collection of Titianesque drawings from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and documentation relating to the Painter.

The house of Tiziano Vecellio known as the Orator, a qualification attributed to him for having held the address with which the Cadorini greeted the doge Alvise Mocenigo, after the victory in the battle of Lepanto (1571), stands on the eastern side of the central square of Pieve di Cadore. The noble residence was built in the sixteenth century and has a compact volume completely walled up, a quadrangular plan, with levels with independent access and a shingle roof. The imposing main front is decorated with lampidei friezes and the Vecellio family coat of arms above the doors: the one on the first floor bearing the date of construction, 1554, and the initials of V (ecelio) imprinted on the architrave. The furnishings and the frescoed study attested to the noble character of the furnishings. The rooms, covered with pine or precious colored fabrics, were heated by fireplaces or tiled stoves.

THE TIZIAN'S SHOVEL

The church of Santa Maria Nascente in Pieve di Cadore is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Cadore and inside you can admire `` La Pala del Tiziano ''. From the middle of the 500th century it dominates the presbytery from behind the main altar, in the parish church. Tiziano Vecellio (Pieve di Cadore 1490ca - Venice 1576) painted this work at an advanced age presumably around 1554. The picture probably came as a gift from the great painter, as a sign of gratitude for the many years in which he enjoyed the parish benefit, assigned by the Duke of Mantua, first to his son Pomponio and then to his nephew. This late work by Titian expresses all the pictorial wisdom of the master who draws the mighty figure of Christ full of a loving gaze towards the kneeling Mother, all surrounded by a vibrant light, a distinctive sign of the immortal Vecellio. Important critics, such as Panofsky (1969), note the exceptional nature of the altarpiece also from the theological point of view, postulating a similarity with the "Christ crowned with thorns" in the Louvre and with Michelangelo's manner.
