BIRTH HOUSE OF TIZIANO VECELLIO
The house of Tiziano Vecellio known as the Orator, a qualification attributed to him for having held the address with which the Cadorini greeted the doge Alvise Mocenigo, after the victory in the battle of Lepanto (1571), stands on the eastern side of the central square of Pieve di Cadore. The noble residence was built in the sixteenth century and has a compact volume completely walled up, a quadrangular plan, with levels with independent access and a shingle roof. The imposing main front is decorated with lampidei friezes and the Vecellio family coat of arms above the doors: the one on the first floor bearing the date of construction, 1554, and the initials of V (ecelio) imprinted on the architrave. The furnishings and the frescoed study attested to the noble character of the furnishings. The rooms, covered with pine or precious colored fabrics, were heated by fireplaces or tiled stoves.
